How do you describe the work you do?
“Makers of things.” The work we do is multi-layered and varied. But at its core it is based on creativity, balance and harmony, and is a response to spaces and media that reflects our particular aesthetic, frequently in collaborative projects. We take a fluid approach to design, creativity and art. Our work is informed by the participants in the process, be it a designer, client or collective. Our repertoire includes interiors, textiles, glass, installations, ceramics, and case goods.
What do you think makes you stand out?
We live fluidly in two worlds and as such, bring this unique experience to our work. This concept of hybridity and the possibility of merging both eastern and western traditions are at the core of our aesthetic and what makes us unique. The depth and range of our skill sets and our extensive experience are what we feel makes us stand out.
Who are your heroes?
Our mentors Rimpoche Tarthang Tulku and Ed Beardsley, and H.H. Dalai Lama. Artists like Paul Klee, Tyeb Mehta, Picasso, Amrita Shergill, Agnes Martin, M.F. Hussain, Henri Matisse, Calder, Ai Weiwei, El Anatsui. Designers like Axel Vervoordt, Michael Smith, Albert Pinto, James Lumsden, Renzo Mongiardino.
In the past six months, who or what has stood out to you and inspired you?
Ai Weiwei and Jacinda Ardern.
What is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given?
When the mind is clear, the curator will appear.
What change do you want to see in the world?
A better understanding of the nature of the mind and how it is going to affect the next generation.
How are you integrating that wish for change into the work that you do?
We have worked with the “next generation” on past projects like the Sacred Murals Project in Sarnath, India. This was a 6 mth project in which we included BFA & MFA students to participate in the project for credit towards their degrees. At Dharma College in Berkeley, where did the Lotus Book Store, we encouraged the director of the college to institute a meditation program with Berkeley High School nearby. At a proposed and recently approved Bike Ranch project in Tucson, AZ, we’re exploring the possibility of starting a youth empowerment program through biking and meditation.
