The Leadership Debrief
What kind of leader do you want to be?
EVERYONE IS A LEADER, EITHER BY CHOICE OR DEFAULT
In January of 2019, I entered the IPEC Coaching program. The decision was made as a result of attracting some clients that were not a right fit for me. And when we do this, meaning engage in work with clients that are not a right fit, things usually don’t end well.
In an effort to attract more of the right clients, I took my company through a full rebrand. I rewrote all of my copy, started to describe the kind of work that I wanted to do, and wrote a manifesto. It was the writing of the manifesto that led me to the decision to get my coaching certificate, and as you read it below you may understand why.
In the consulting work I was doing, I spoke to clients about integrating who they were into the work they were doing, I just worded it a little bit differently. I spoke to them instead about honing in on their points of differentiation so we could create strategies around those points and transform them into standouts in their field. The only problem was, standing out is a scary business.
When we stand out, we feel vulnerable, exposed, and if people don’t like the work we are doing, we feel rejected. And so these clients who were not ready to stand out never allowed me to move forward with the strategies we had created and agreed upon. Instead, they opted to fit in.
These experiences helped me to recognize that in order to help creatives, small businesses, managers, and teams in the kind of meaningful ways that I wanted to, I needed training that would help me to move my clients through their fears so that together we could create real sustainable growth.
One of my favorite tools that I have become certified in through the IPEC School, is an assessment which I now administer to all of my clients called the Energy Leadership Index. This assessment uncovers how we show up to our work on a daily basis, when we are under stress and when things are going well for us. It uncovers the patterns that keep us stuck, and the strategies that bring us closer to our goals.
Once the assessment is completed, I take my clients through a 90 minute debrief of the results. We discuss strategies to reduce the amount of stress they experience, we define the kind of leader they currently are, as well as the kind of leader they want to be, and we look for approaches to help improve their level of focus, decision making abilities, and ways for them to step into their fullest potential.
